@Monk

I was mainly looking for tuning advice on the game server side it self, in order to use my hardware/OS at its best. That's how I've found your blog. I'm already using HZ=1000 (but not DEVICE_POLLING, yet). All my players are in the same country, so we have in general a "game ping" between 15ms and 50ms.
The server is not dedicated to L4D2, it's a general purpose server (mail/http/personnal backup...).

I was also wondering what could I do to optimize the running of linux binaries on FreeBSD. The only reason I use linux compatibility mode is to run the L4D2 server.

It's nice to see people like you, strongly involved in optimization of game servers and with a deep knowledge of what's under the hood.

Not sure what kind of 'tuning' advice you want, what problems are you having? Just enable DEVICE_POLLING in the kernel, set HZ to 1000, disable cpufreq and that should be enough :)

I've discovered your blog few minutes ago, and I'm very happy to read that you promote FreeBSD for game servers. I'm currently hosting a L4D2 dedicated server on FreeBSD 8.1.
It runs ok, but I was looking for tuning advices (ticrate and so on).

So far people like it better than the 66fps stuff.

I'm going to sell this for a one time fee.

<a href="#comment-10336" rel="nofollow">@Claudio</a>

I've never seen that error before. It looks like it's having trouble using HPET as a timesource and falls back to using TSC instead.

Do you have HPET actually on your server? (ls /dev/hpet)
